LAHORE: Dalits (untouchables) and Muslims are in a horrible condition in India, Dalit Voice Bangalore Editor VT Rajshekhar said on Thursday. Rajshekhar was addressing a seminar titled ‘Status of Untouchables in India’, organised by the Punjab University’s (PU) Centre for South Asian Studies in collaboration with the Sir Ganga Ram Heritage Foundation. PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran presided over the seminar, and Dalit scholar Dr SK Biswas also spoke on the occasion. Rajashekhar said not a single communal riot took place during the 1,000-year Muslim rule in India, but now two percent Brahmans were ruling the country through tactics of riots and hatred. He said the Indian elections were a fraud, and only a game of muscles, resources and power. “Minorities can never get proper representation through these elections,” he said, adding the Indian constitution gave equal rights to all its citizens, but the reality was very different from the presented facts, as there were different standards for Brahmans and other ‘superior’ castes. “There is not real freedom of the press. The media is controlled by Brahmans,” he said. Speaking to the gathering, Dr Kamran said Pakistan was a nuclear power and some world powers wanted to “make us weak to weaken the Muslims of the world”. He said, “We need to look after this capability so that we may be able to protect Muslims. Youth must keep an eye on the events occurring around us, and study religious events in order to analyse things objectively.” staff report.
