LUCKNOW: Stung by the Lok Sabha election results, which failed to match its expectations, the Mayawati government is back knocking the doors of rural folks. And, what better to start than getting the Ambedkar villages electrified.

In a significant development, the UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has decided to get over 3,500 Ambedkar villages electrified, in a project which would cost the state government close to Rs 400 crore. Chairman-cum-managing director, UPPCL, Navneet Sehgal said the project would begin soon.

The CMD said that managing directors of all distribution companies (discoms) have been asked to start the project in their respective areas and review its progress twice a month. "The development of Ambedkar villages is now the first priority of the state government. Officials in various discoms have been instructed that it should not be compromised,'' a senior UPPCL official informed.

Sehgal said the government has started the third phase of rural electrification under the Ambedkar gram electrification project. Under the scheme of things, villages in all 18 divisions of the state would be taken up. Lucknow division has the maximum number -- 415 -- of such
Ambedkar gram sabhas which needs electrification.

It is followed by Varanasi division which has some 262 such villages. Likewise, Faizabad division has 244 such villages, Gorakhpur has 241, Bareilly 230, Allahabad 214, Moradabad 203, Aligarh 178, Meerut 175, while Agra has 174 villages designated as Ambedkar villages.

Kanpur and Azamgarh division too do not lag behind: they have 220 and 216 such villages respectively where electrification is yet to be taken up. Similarly, there are some 140 and 118 Ambedkar villages in Basti and Saharanpur where the project would be taken up by the UPPCL.
Jhansi, Vidhyanchal and Devipatan divisions would have their 90, 98 and 187 such villages covered under the project.

Sehgal said that special emphasis should be laid on the quality of work and that all the concerned managing directors would get the villages verified physically by some senior officials.
