Atrocities on Dalits on the rise in UP: NGO report

New Delhi, May 29 Uttar Pradesh has witnessed an increase in atrocities against dalits and tribals in 2008, a non-government human rights organisation today said and charged the Mayawati government in the state with not taking appropriate action in this regard.
Referring to state police records, Asian Center for Human Rights (ACHR) said the cases of atrocities against dalits and tribals increased in UP by 4.47 per cent in 2008 in comparison to cases registered in 2007."

Atrocities against dalits and Tribals under the Chief Ministership of Mayawati, (who is) a dalit himself, has increased by 4.47 per cent in 2008 in comparison to 2007, ACHR said in its latest report on human rights status in India.

" Dalits in the state are denied entry into temples, barrred from using public facilities, including water wells and faced discrimination in education,"it added.

According to records of the Uttar Pradesh Police, ACHR said 6,942 cases of atrocities were registered in 2008. Police had registered 6,628 cases of atrocities against dalits and tribals in the state in 2007, ACHR added.

"The Chief Minister has failed to take appropriate measures to ensure the rights of the dalits,"it added.
