PANAJI: The Tribes of Goa has demanded that SC and ST community members working for the state government should get their rightful promotions under the general category as well as the reserved category.
Tribes of Goa, an organisation set up to promote the welfare and interests of the tribal community in the state, made the demand during a meeting with the chief minister Digambar Kamat and chairman of the high power vigilance and monitoring committee of the state held on July 7.
The members of Tribes of Goa told the chief minister and the committee members that Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe employees are entitled to promotion in the general as well as the reserved category. Spokesman and founder of Tribes of Goa, Guru Shirodkar, told the committee members that certain posts which are vacant in the state government offices are not being filled with SC/ST candidates on the ground that they (candidates) do not fall in the general category.
Shirodkar said that they have also appealed to the authorities to take up the formation of the State Level Monitoring Committee under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Developers Act, 2006. Members of Tribes of Goa also met social welfare minister Sudin Dhavalikar and asked him to discuss the issues by holding a joint meeting with the law secretary and the chief secretary along with representatives of the SC/ST community.
As regards the implementation of Tribal Forest Act 2006, the director of social welfare was instructed to look into the matter so as to protect the rights and interests of STs under the said Tribal Forest Act by setting up panchayat, district and state level monitoring committees.
