'SC, STs denied engineering, medical seats'

Bangalore, Jun 22, 2013, DHNS :

The allotment of medical and engineering seats for the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) through the Common Entrance Test (CET) is not taking place as per the Supreme Court directive, according to the Karnataka Dalitha Sangarsha Samithi (Ambedkarvadi) Rajya Samithi.

The SC and ST students who are eligible for seats through open merit are instead being given seats under the reserved category, as a result of which, the number of reserved category seats is coming down.

“Such merit students must be alloted seats under the general category instead,” said S R Kolluru, the State convener of the Karnataka Dalitha Samithi. “Those candidates with lower ranks are not getting seats because of this practice,” he added.

A meeting on the issue was conducted between the Minister for Medical Education, principal secretary and officials from the Karnataka Examination Authority on Friday.

The Ministry has asked for the statistics from the last three years to review seat allotments, according to Kolluru.
